History of the Congregation

The call for a Disciples of Christ (Christian Church) congregation in the greater Round Rock area began when a few “Disciples” met to lay plans for organization of at the Bank of The Hills in February, 1983. The first service was held on October 2, 1983, at the Noah’s Ark Day School, with some 50 people in attendance. In the Disciples tradition a lay leadership steering committee met weekly to plan each service and invite visiting ministers to preach. Within six months attendance outgrew the day school, moving the congregation to Deepwood Elementary, and later to Chisholm Trail Middle School in Round Rock.

In January 1984, Reverend Dr. Ray Chester became the first fulltime clergy to serve the congregation. In December 1985, a 5.71 acre parcel of land was purchased in northeast Round Rock. Following the untimely death of Dr. Chester, Rev. Dr. Dan Owen became interim minister in April (through September) 1987.

Rev. Dr. David A. Baker began his ministry  on September 1, 1987. In December 1988 Phase I of the master building plan began. This first building, including a sanctuary, classrooms, kitchen and offices, was dedicated on Easter, March 26, 1989.

With the vision to meet the needs of the growing community, a Future Plans Committee was created in 1993 that led to a major capital campaign for debt retirement and funds to proceed with Phase II of the master plan. The fellowship hall with recreational area, kitchen and classrooms were dedicated in November 1997.

By June 2001, the membership had grown to 335 members when Dr. Baker retired following 42 years in the ministry. A Search and Call Committee secured the leadership of Rev. Dr. Larry Cowan to become the RRCC minister. Dr. Cowan served from June 2002 through June 2008.  In October 2008 we celebrated our 25th Anniversary as a congregation.

In August of 2009, the congregation called the Rev. Paul Klaus and the Rev. Lisa Klaus to serve in Co-Ministry as the Senior Minister of Round Rock Christian Church.
